What's Your Motivation?

Why do you need a new (or newer) vehicle?

It pays to understand what your motivation is for purchasing an automobile.

If you're in the market for an automobile there is always a primary reason, whether you have identified it or not.

For example:

  • Your current vehicle may not be safe, running, or doesn't meet your needs...
  • Your family may be growing and you need a bigger or more economical vehicle.
  • Maybe your current monthly payment has become more than you can afford.
  • You may desire or need a 4x4 vehicle for recreational or work purposes.
  • Your lease is coming to an end...
  • Your car has been totaled in a recent accident.
  • You just want a new car! (nothing wrong with that)

Whatever your reason, it's a good idea to list your primary motivation for making the purchase. It will help you see the big picture more clearly.

EVERY consumer is occasionally guilty of making impulsive decisions when shopping. It may be okay for small retail purchases, but being impulsive while buying an automobile is a recipe for regret (buyer's remorse).

Certain unanticipated factors will always arise after the sale (that were not considered at the time of purchase). We get distracted when buying. But if you spend time thinking things over, these factors will be limited and only minor realizations (instead of regretful problems).

For example:

  • You find out the gas mileage you get with the newly purchased vehicle might not be so economical after all, especially with the daily commute to work.
  • Maybe the insurance on the vehicle purchased turns out much higher than originally thought, but you didn't take time to speak with your insurance agent first.
  • That minivan, you didn't want to be seen in, really would've been more practical than the more stylish SUV you purchased.

.and so on.

Again, various factors can contribute to your being DISSATISFIED with your purchase.

After you establish the "Why", you should also identify what your "NEEDs" versus " WANTs" are.
